Dinner Speaker

Alan Barrett, Executive Director, Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority

The Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority (BGPA) incorporates Kings Park, the Western Australian Botanic Garden and Bold Park.  The BGPA operates as part of the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.  The Department was formed on 1 July 2017 to promote biodiversity and conservation to enrich people’s lives through sustainable management of Western Australia’s species, ecosystems, lands and the attractions in the Department’s care. Alan joined the BGPA in July 2018, coming from the Western Australian Public Sector Commission (PSC), a central WA government agency providing sector wide leadership in governance and integrity.  Prior to that, Alan’s career includes work as a secondary school teacher and curriculum-writer and various positions in the Western Australian culture and arts portfolio.  Alan held governance and policy roles in the Art Gallery of WA and at the WA Museum. In these organisations Alan developed an interest in balancing research, collections management, public programs, visitor services and commercial activities in iconic values-driven public institutions. This experience translates strongly to the BGPA but with the added challenges associated with maintaining a living collection, very high visitation and parks that are open 24/7.
